East Timor is the world's newest nation. On 30 August 1999, the East Timorese voted overwhelmingly for independence, ending 24 years of Indonesia occupation. However, they were intimidated by the militia (or armed groups) known to be directly supported by the Indonesian police and army. Here is a view from Cape Fatucama of the cove of Areia Branca (also known as White Sands in English).
East Timor Facts: Area: 15,000 sq km, Population: 924,000, Languages: Tetum, Portugese, Indonesian, English, Religion: 91.4% Catholic, 2.6% Protestant, 1.7% Muslim.
